This page is to share various project management case studies. I share them here, but I ask the user to check the copyrights and creative commons guidelines before sharing with others since some restrictions might apply.

The following is a short description of each case study with a link to access the full case study in PDF format. Although we list these case studies per certain categories, most of the learning is applicable across all types of projects and domains:

CHALLENGE

The main challenges

  • Organizational stakeholders: There were many organizational stakeholders. These included: three
    project owners, one main contractor, and three construction companies (joint venture).
  • Dispersed work: The work was spread across four construction sites, multiple vendors, and
    subcontractors.
  • Teams integration: There were a few challenges among the partners’ organizations (Project Owners). These were in addition to the typical difficulties between Project Owners and Service Providers.

SOLUTION

The solution for this challenge was modular construction and four construction sites (we will document this
in another case study). Splitting the construction work among multiple sites helped us avoid the island space
limitations and labor issues. Further, by going to fabrication yards, we were able to enhance safety and
workforce productivity.

CHALLENGE

The following are some of the challenges related to this project.

  • The project was on a small island, with an existing refinery and limited space for the new plant. As a result, we had to reclaim land from the sea to increase the plot space
  • The government wanted to connect all of these islands (see figure) into one large island; reclamation was
    ongoing while our project was in progress; which means we had to finish before they close the shipping channel on us
  • Another difficult challenge was the lack of qualified laborers in the area, which meant that we would have to bring from other countries, which led to another problem: housing them.
  • A typical project of this size would require more than 500 people on site, which was not possible in our case.

SOLUTION

Option 1

  • Build the plant’s central process units on barges,
  • Float the barges to a partially prepared site,
  • Build a dike around them,
  • Fill the barges with concrete to settle them on the shallow seafloor,
  • Fill around them (reclaim from the sea), and
  • Build the rest of the facilities around them.
Option 2

  • Use modular construction techniques,
  • Build the central process units as modules at fabrication yards in the region,
  • Ship them to the site on barges,
  • Install them one after the other – like Legos,
  • This was the selected option,
